There are four Speech Therapists at Vista Nova. They see pupils individually, in groups and in the classroom environment.

Speech therapy aims to facilitate improvement in the learners’ receptive and expressive language skills. Speech therapists aim to achieve optimum use and understanding of spoken language. Other areas also worked on include:

  • Articulation of speech sounds (saying sounds clearly)
  • Feeding therapy
  • Hearing screening of Grade 1 learners
  • Auditory perceptual skills such as sound awareness which is a precursor to reading
  • Social Skills
  • AAC – Alternative and Augmentative Communication

There is a small computer lab, which is run by the Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy departments, dedicated to communication skills for non-verbal learners.
